Indian women’s hockey team beat china by 5-4 to win Asia cup on November 05, 2017. This was India’s second Asia Cup title win after they had beaten Japan in 2004 in New Delhi. Playing the final for the first time since 2009, India managed to hold off China 5-4 in shootout in the final in Kakamighara, Japan. India had defeated defending champions Japan 4-2 in the semi-final to make the final. The team had also beaten China 4-1 in the group stages. With this win the Indian women’s hockey team qualified for next year’s World Cup. It was 1-1 at full time after China found a late equaliser through Tiantian Luo, who converted a penalty corner in the 47th minute. India had scored through Navjot Kaur in the 25th minute of the game. The triumph of the Indian women’s team follows the Asia Cup victory of the men’s side last month. South Korea secured third place with a 1-0 win over Japan earlier in the day.
Notably India won all their matches in the group stages as they beat Malaysia, Singapore and China. They remained unbeaten in the tournament. The women’s team got a new coach six months back and Harendra Singh has breathed new life to the team. India had already qualified for the 2018 Women’s World Cup.
Striker Rani Rampal was the captain of 18-member Indian team at the ninth women’s Asia Cup hockey tournament at Kakamigahara City, Japan. Senior goalkeeper Savita was the vice-captain of the Indian side.

The ASHF Asia Cup
The ASHF Asia Cup is an international men’s and women’s field hockey tournament governed by the Asian Hockey Federation(ASHF). It was introduced in 1982 for men’s competition and the women’s competition was added a year later as non-official championship until the official tournament held in 1985. South Korea has been the most successful team with 4 titles in Men’s and 3 titles in Women’s competition. India has reached the most number of finals in Men’s (8 times) and South Korea, Japan(tied) in Women’s (5 times) competitions.
India is also winner of Men’s Asia Cup Hockey
It must be recalled that India won Men’s Asia Cup earlier. The 2017 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup was the tenth tournament to date in Hockey Asia Cup for men. It was held from 11 to 22 October 2017 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The winner of this tournament qualified for the 2018 World Cup in India. India won their third title after defeating Malaysia 2–1 in the final, while Pakistan captured the bronze medal, beating South Korea 6–3.
